Grape Picking in Bauang, La Union

Saturday April 20, 2019

After our cool vacation from Baguio, we decided to go for grape picking. We packed our things and drove to Bauang in La Union.  We Filipinos dont normally see grapes in our backyards. Our common beliefs are grapes are imported and normally grown in places with cold weather.  When we were told by our driver about the grape picking in Bauang, La Union, we were surprised, this is something new to us!

In the early 70’s Bauang is called as the “Beach Capital of the Philippines” because of the calm waters, fine sand and admirably swaying coconut trees along the shorelines of Baccuit Sur to Pagdalagan Sur. However, Bauang, La Union is now famous for its Grape Farming.  It is believed that grape framing had started by Avelino Lomboy who owns Lomboy Grape Farm.  The grape farm was founded in 1972 and said to be the first grape farm in the Philippines.

Upon entering Bauang, we already noticed lots of vendors on the side of the streets holding signs for grape picking. We stopped and chose one of the grape farms in the area. While walking going to our selected grape farm, a lots of grapes on its vines can be seen. We were so excited to pick and try some.

Locals said that the best time to go for grapes picking in La Union is during the dry seasons, otherwise known as summer, towards the end of March until May.

It was a wonderful experience, we loved it. Given a time and chance, we will surely go back here to enjoy the grape picking again.
